Platycarya strobilacea is a flowering plant in the family Juglandaceae, distributed in Korea, Japan, and China. It is a deciduous tree growing to 12 to 15 m, flowering from June to August. The flowers are monoecious, which means the individual flowers are either male or female and sexes can be found on the same plant. Young leaves are edible, and the oval black-brown fruits have been used for dyeing fabrics. Natural black dye can be obtained from the tree bark. In Traditional Korean Medicine, the fruits, roots and barks are used as a medicine to treat inflammatory diseases. The extract of P. strobilacea was reported to have anti-fungal effect, anti-inflammatory effect by NF-κB inhibition, and anti-oxidant effect by scavenging free radicals. Several flavonoids were reported to be found in P. strobilacea such as quercetin, morin, quercitrin and their glycosides. Ellagic acid and its derivatives were also found in P. strobilacea.
