Aloe barbadensis, commonly called aloe vera, is a succulent plant of the genus Aloe that originates from the Arabian Peninsula, but grows wild in tropical climates throughout the world. Aloe has been used for centuries as a remedy for various ailments, especially those of the skin. The succulent plant contains a thick gel in the leaves that can be applied directly on to the skin to ease irritation or on burns as well being used as a food. Aloe is a popular ingredient in after sun products. The gel is processed into a juice that is used as a bowel tonic and laxative as well a health drink. The laxative properties are due to the anthraquinones in the sap.
Research has shown that Aloe may be beneficial in healing wounds. Molecular analysis of human liver and lung cell lines treated with aloe extract demonstrated an up-regulation of cell proliferation markers. Aloe extracts increase intercellular communication and proliferation of human fibroblasts with stimulation of basic fibroblast growth factor-2. Together with the recent finding of the protective effect of aloin against heat stress-mediated oxidative stress, aloe vera continues to be one of the most important cosmetic ingredients.
