Pulsatilla koreana is a species of the genus Pulsatilla, called Korean pasque flower. It is a hairy, tufted, perennial herb native to Korea, with bell-shaped purple flower blooming in spring. The rhizomes of P. koreana were used as medicinal herbs in Traditional Korean Medicine for amoebic dysentery, malaria, epistaxis, and hemorrhoids. Phytochemical studies on the P. koreana root have demonstrated the presence of protoanemonin, anemonin, ranunculin, and saponins, mainly the oleanane and lupane-type triterpenoid saponins. The root extract of P. koreana has been reported to possess anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial activities. Recently, some Korean researchers demonstrated that the extracts of P. koreana showed anti-microbial activities against Propionibacterium acnes and Pityrosporum ovale, which are the major cause of acnes and dandruff, respectively. In addition, a research on a wide range of gram negative and gram positive bacteria showed that the extract of P. koreana had strong anti-microbial activity.
