Myrtus communis, also known as myrtle, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the Mediterranean region in southern Europe. Flowers and Fruits of Myrtle with pleasant odor are eaten raw or cooked, and the fruits are able to be made into a liquor. Myrtle is also used as a medicinal herb worldwide for extensive purposes as infusion and decoction. In traditional herbal remedy, it is taken internally in the treatment of urinary infections, digestive problems, vaginal discharge, bronchial congestion, sinusitis, and dry coughs. Externally it is used in the treatment of acne, wounds, and gum infections. The fruit decoction was also used to bathe newborns with reddened skin.
According to the scientific articles, M. communis exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-microbial activities. With these activities, it is beneficial on skin. It is described to be effective on burn wounds, hair growth, and acne with the inhibitory activity against Propionibacterium acnes. Besides, a research study also reported that myrtle shows an effect on facial warts.
