Gleditsia japonica is a deciduous tree growing up to 20 m in height. The flowers are hermaphroditic (having both male and female organs) and are pollinated by insects. Dried fruits of G. japonica have long been known in Traditional Oriental Medicine as saponin drugs and used as diuretics and expectorants. Not many scientific researches were conducted on G. japonica but several scientists demonstrated that the fruit extract of G. japonica have anti-viral, anti-oxidant, and anti-cancer activities.
