Rhododenron weyrichii, also known as Weyrich’sazalea, is a flowering plant that is found mostly in the southeastern region of Jeju Island. Weyrich’sazalea flower is the official symbolic flower in Jeju. The red flowers cover in red from the coastal areas to the low areas of HallaMountain in May. For this reason, it was selected as Jeju Island’s representative flower of May by the National Institute of Forest Science. The leaves were used as a diuretic and stomachic in folk remedy and sometimes consumed as an alternative tea.
R. weyrichii has not been studied well on both the efficacies and compounds, so far, but there is one research of R. weyrichii as a cosmetic ingredient. According to this study, the ethanol extract of R. weyrichii showed skin brightening activity by inhibiting melanin synthesis. It showed anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities as well.
