Cornus controversa is a tree growing at high altitudes of about 500-1,400 m and is found in the center of Halla Mountain. It has tiered horizontal branch structures and white flowers that bloom layer on layer every summer. It looks like a multi-layered white wedding cake, therefore, commonly called ‘wedding cake tree.’ Most parts of this tree are edible and have been used as traditional medicines. In traditional medicine, the infusion has been used for stroke and furuncle. The fresh fruits are also edible and the color is dark red when they are ripened. It was reported that it contains various phenolic compounds and terpenoids. GNS investigated and found that Jeju Wedding Cake has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects.
