Artemisia vulgaris, commonly called mugwort, is a rhizomatous perennial herb, native to northeastern Asia. A. vulgaris has a long history in treating human ailments by medicinal plants in various parts of the world. In Chinese tradition, this plant has been used as a stomach pain-relieving agent and to treat gastric ulcers, hepatitis, and neonatal jaundice in combination with acupuncture treatment. A. vulgaris demonstrated multiple therapeutic properties as a medicinal plant such as anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-tumoral, immunomodulatory, and anti-septic. These activities are mainly related to the presence of various species of secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, coumarins, sesquiterpenoids, and acetylenes.
