Moringa oleifera, also commonly called moringa or drumstick tree, is a fast growing deciduous tree mainly growing in tropical and subtropical areas in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal, where it is used as a food as well as a folk medicine. Various parts of the plant including bark, sap, root, leaf, seed, and flower are used as folk remedy to treat gastric ulcers, skin diseases, diabetes, and fatigue. Vitamins like vitamin B such as folic acid and vitamin C are present in M. oleifera leaves. The leaves are also rich in minerals and other essential phytochemicals. The major phytochemical constituents of the leaves are phenolic compounds and flavonoids such as crypto-chlorogenic acid, isoquercetin which have high anti-oxidant activity. Several scientific studies also demonstrated that M. oleifera exhibits anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory activities due to abundant phenolic acids and flavonoids. So, the leaves of M. oleifera are used as potential anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial agents.
