Chaenomeles sinensis (synonym: Pseudocydonia sinensis ) is a deciduous plant native to East Asia, including Korea, Japan, and China. This plant is related to the European quince (genus Cydonia), differing in the serrated leaves and the flowers having deciduous sepals. The fruit is hard and astringent, though it does soften and becomes less astringent after a period of frost. C. sinensis is suitable for making liquors, as well as marmalade and preserves, as the fruit contains more pectin than apples and true quinces.

The fruits of Chaenomeles sinensis, Chinese quince, have been used in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) for treating a cough, the common cold, pain, and diarrhea. In oriental culture, quince is considered warm fruit, which means it is helpful for people who have too much “cold” in their body in TCM. In several studies, it is identified that Chaenomeles sinensis is effective for anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-pruritic effects.
