Panthenol is an active substance used in dermatology to keep healthy skin and treat defects in the stratum corneum. Panthenol's functions are known for hydrating, softening, and barrier strengthening. D-panthenol is an enantiomeric form of panthenol, and unlike panthenol, D-panthenol always exists as a biologically active form. It is an alcoholic analogue of D-pantothenic acid useful as a supplement or application in supporting a healthy epithelium. In skin cells, D-panthenol is absorbed and metabolized to pantothenic acid; it incites new cell growth, binds water, and acts as a moisturizer. Pantothenic acid is extremely hygroscopic. According to Mintel data, the number of launches of panthenol-containing skincare products in Korea has consistently increased since 2018.
