Camellia japonica is a flowering shrub native to Korea, Japan and China. It is called the "Rose of Winter" because the flowering season is between the winter months of December and March. The flower buds of C. japonica have been used to treat bleeding due to internal and external injuries. It is also used as an anti-inflammatory in internal medicine in traditional remedies. In contrast, the seeds are usually used as an oil for conditioning and styling hair and moisturizing and nourishing skin. Many scientific studies support the benefits of C. japonica on the skin, such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and inhibitory effects on melanogenesis.
